Ferrofluid

In Ferrofluid, users interact in a variety of fun ways with ferrofluid; a powerful substance that becomes strongly magnetized when in the presence of a magnetic field.

The exhibit has two places for exploring ferrofluid. In the main cylinder, individual electromagnets placed under metal objects allow visitors to magnetize and explore how the ferrofluid climbs, descends, and makes interesting shapes. In the center of the cylinder, a dual upper and lower electromagnet system gives the visitor the opportunity to find the balance between upper and lower magnetic fields creating a string of ferrofluid between the two.

In addition, the exhibit has a fully-sealed sphere where visitors can use magnetic wands to make the ferrofluid climb the walls, drop from the top, and watch it fall through the suspension fluid.
