Nestled up high in the ceiling is Overhead Fans. This exhibit invites guests to stand beneath it at one of twelve places on the floor. Just above each of the 12 marked areas are corresponding photoelectric occupancy sensors that point downward at the reflective floor targets. When a user breaks the photoelectric sensor beam by standing or moving underneath it, the corresponding fan quickly turns on to propel and levitate a balloon!
Multiple visitors can work together to complete challenges such as propelling a balloon in a circle around the exhibit by turning on the fans in succession using their bodies. Each fan motor has an LED ring that illuminates to provide visual feedback to users when the fans turn on.
