We installed Chinook Arc in March of this year and it has been warmly welcomed by the community. This Friday (June 13, 2014) the City of Calgary will celebrate Chinook Arc and Barb Scott Park with a public event. Artists Joe O’Connell and Blessing Hancock will give a presentation at the opening and then invite the public to interact with the sculpture directly.
Chinook Arc has a number of technical innovations to enable it to withstand the harsh climate of Calgary as well as respond in a unique and unprecedented way to public input. The sculpture has a sensor that allows anyone to create moving light sequences by simply waving their hands or playing photos or videos on their cell phones. To demonstrate how well Chinook Arc expresses movement and emotion we worked with Calgary composer, Lorna MacLachlan, to create an instrumental musical score for the event on Friday. While the Lorna MacLachlan Quintet performs As Slava Plays, Joe will play a light sequence he created as a video on his phone. Then Joe and Blessing will invite the public to play with the sculpture themselves. We expect and hope that the public will find surprising and positive ways to use the sculpture that we have not anticipated. #gallery-8 { margin: auto; } #gallery-8 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-8 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-8 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
