Creative Machines worked with non-profit organization, Potters for Peace, to design a new portable water filter press. Potters for Peace sets up small factories to produce point-of-use water filters where they are needed most. These water filters solve the huge problem of getting potable water in places with very little infrastructure. Potters for Peace brings the molds, a 20-ton press, and their training to remote areas; local potters do the rest and create their own self-sustaining businesses. It is a much better model for international development than building centralized plants that require more infrastructure than many areas can currently support.
However, a big challenge for the organization is getting the press through customs and into places where it is most needed. Creative Machines developed a highly portable press that could be disassembled and checked as airplane luggage. Even though our press can produce 20 tons of force, it can be disassembled and made to fit in a suitcase. It is so small it doesn’t even incur an oversize fee.
Through the development of this highly portable press, whenever there is interest in making the filters, Potters for Peace has the ability to travel with the press and molds without a large startup effort. They can start making filters in a matter of weeks instead of months. #gallery-6 { margin: auto; } #gallery-6 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-6 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-6 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Potters for Peace is currently working on a project in Tuxtia Gutierrez, the capital of the state of Chiapas, MX. They are making water filters for the Maya villages in that area. Special thanks to Mike Stubna for providing an update and pictures of the current project.
