Year in Review — A Look Back at 2018

2018 has been a great year for Creative Machines! We have installed our public art pieces in extraordinary cities around the country, begun sculpture and exhibit projects for awesome new clients from all over, and have strived to create fresh pieces that push the boundaries of what we have done in the past. Here are some photographic highlights from our projects that dominated 2018! PUBLIC ART Camaraderie is a series of three monumental sculptures nestled outside a veteran’s clinic in San Jose, CA. The piece was inspired by the strong […]

Community Engagement at Creative Machines

Many of our projects involve extensive community engagement that goes beyond discussions and surveys. We recognize that people think with their hands as well as their minds and that when communities come together to help plan projects they experience a sense of camaraderie and investment in the final product. We also learn valuable lessons that we couldn’t otherwise. We have developed a kit of parts and a process for working with groups of all ages and helping people express their creativity and highest aspirations for their community. Our two most […]

Visit From Science North

We recently had the pleasure of hosting visitors from Science North, an interactive science museum in Greater Sudbury, Ontario, Canada and one of the area’s biggest tourist attractions. We are in the middle of building several exhibits for the center: Lissajous, Building with Light, Overhead Fans and Linkages & Pulleys. Here’s a little bit of information about the exhibits you see in the following images! Building with Light is a classic Creative Machines exhibit. In Building with Light, visitors can work at one of several stations building with sanded acrylic […]

Our Portable Filter Presses in Nepal!

Our friends at Ceramic Water Filter Solutions have set up a new point-of-use water filter factory in Nepal using the latest batch of our Portable Filter Presses. We’ve recently improved our design thanks to feedback from Michael Stubna and some simulations by our intern Rishabh Parmar. The portable filter press is a product we make available to NGOs like Potters for Peace and Ceramic Water Filter Solutions. Our press is easy to bring into foreign countries because it breaks down into pieces that can be completely checked in airline baggage. […]

Perpetual Nephron Machine Fabrication Part 1

We recently constructed a new ball machine for Kidney Week 2018 called The Perpetual Nephron Machine. The ball machine is designed to describe the process of uric acid removal in patients with CKD (chronic kidney disease) and gout using the drug Krystexxa. Ball machines can be a great way to illustrate abstract processes that take place inside the human body. Here are some behind the scenes photos of the beginning stages of fabrication of this rolling ball sculpture. Be sure to stay tuned for more documentation of this project coming […]

River Alive! Exhibits Ship to Philadelphia

We just finished shipping out a set of new exhibits to The Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia! Making of Bicycle Generator for Toronto Public Library

We have been busy making a custom interactive racing exhibit for the Toronto Public Library called Bicycle Generator. This exhibit allows kids to pedal a bicycle or turn a pair of hand cranks to generate electricity on two WeWatt stations. As each side races against the other, a column of colorful LED lights begins to fill up the digital scoreboard in front of the players, signaling who is in the lead. Here are some photos of the team putting this exhibit together!

Body Politic Update Part 2

Body Politic is almost ready for installation in Lenexa, Kansas! The spheres are five and seven feet in diameter and are made from hand-hammered, laser-cut stainless steel. The large-scale, interactive sculptures feature more than 200 unique silhouettes, each conveying something different about daily life. Each visitor can investigate the figures and find a representation of themselves within the cut-out figures. Check out past blog posts HERE and HERE for more on this project. The sculptures are slated to be installed early this month! Here are some photos of the sculptures […]

San Diego Growing Home Progress: Part 3

Growing Home is in its final stages of fabrication and our team is now focusing on getting the internal LED lighting all set up within the massive sculpture. At night, our powerful point-source lights will project through the perforated stainless steel shell to activate the space around the sculpture with the projected silhouettes of the words that make up the surface. The illuminated landscape around the shell becomes a magical space for exploration at night and when viewed from above. Here are some photos of the installation of the bright […]
